Football is the world's largest sport, played professionally by thousands and loved by billions. Hence, it's no surprise that the top players are regularly some of the most famous people in the world.

Here are the world's top ten highest paid footballers for 2021 as of August.

Robert Lewandowski- $483,000 per week

Club: Bayern Munich

Robert Lewandowski is seen as one of the best strikers of all time. He has scored 500 career goals for club and country. Some of his other accolades include: The Best FIFA men's player 2020, Polish Sports personality of the year 2021, Bundesliga Top Scorer, Champions League Top Scorer 2020 etc. All of which more than justify a whopping 483,000 dollars a week salary.

David de Gea- $517,000 per week

Club: Manchester United

David de Gea is the world's highest paid goalkeeper, the Manchester United shot-stopper won the Premier League Golden Glove award in the 2017/18 season with 18 clean sheets.

Kevin de Bruyne- $531,000 per week

Club: Manchester City

Kevin de Bruyne's new contract sees him become Manchester City's highest paid player. Those who have seen him play will tell you he deserves every penny of it. The Belgian attacker can often be found in the thick of City's goal scoring efforts.

Cristiano Ronaldo- $531,000 per week

Club: Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Old Trafford included a severe pay cut, but the Portuguese striker is still one of United's highest paid players.

Kylian Mbappe- $566,000 per week

Club: Paris Saint-Germain

After a break out performance in the 2018 World Cup, Mbappe has become the face of football's next generation. Given his current momentum, he will only climb higher on this list in years to come.

Gareth Bale- $690,000 per week

Club: Real Madrid

Known for his unbelievable speed and skill, Bale has acted as an integral part of Tottenham and Real Madrid's goal scoring machine. Although he has suffered a dip in form in recent years, he is still solidly in the top ten highest paid football players.

Antoine Griezmann- $793,000 per week

Club: FC Barcelona

Griezmann is Barcelona's highest paid player in the absence of Lionel Messi. He was a major player in France's world cup triumph but still hasn't found the form he had in Atletico.

Luis Suarez- $793,000 per week

Club: Atletico Madrid

Luis Suarez has become a talisman at Atletico, leading the team to a La Liga title in his first year. The best possible justification for his hefty salary.

Neymar- $836,000

Club: Paris Saint-Germain

Neymar's transfer to PSG from Barcelona made headlines just for the financial implications alone. Years later and he is still one of the best paid football players in the world, capitalising on Ronaldo's pay cut to place himself at number 2 on this list.

Lionel Messi- $1,325,000

Club: Paris Saint-Germain

In the brief moment that Messi's future hung in the balance, only very wealthy clubs like Manchester City and PSG could even consider signing the Argentinian forward.

PSG would be the ones to sign Messi and given his illustrious resume including but not limited to multiple Champions league and La Liga triumphs, they were all too happy to make him the best paid man in the world of football.
